Teen Review: “Uglies” by Scott Westerfeld

At age sixteen in the 24th century, all teens go through a process called The Surge, where an Ugly, a regular teen, undergoes massive surgery to become a Pretty. Pretties enjoy a life in a place called New Pretty Town, where they live in a completely social world. In other words, no work…just parties. After Tally’s friend Peris becomes a Pretty, Tally begins to develop a relationship with a fellow Ugly, Shay, who is opposed to becoming a Pretty and what The Surge does to you. Shay is in contact with a group of runaways who live far away from society in a place called The Smoke. The people who live there have never been through the transformation of becoming a Pretty, and they live off the land. They avoid the virus implanted into an Uglies’ head when they are being transformed that makes them “air heads,” living without a care in the world. Tally must choose between escaping or living the so-called dream life of a Pretty, even if that life takes away everything that makes you, you. This story is a fascinating outlook on a future that could possibly be ours. If given the choice, what would you choose?
