Teen Review: “Matched” by Ally Condie

Living within the Society is Cassia Reyes, who is matched on her 17th birthday, like every citizen. Your match is chosen based on an algorithm that picks the best person for you and, therefore, is whom you spend the rest of your life. Cassia is matched with Xander, a boy she has known and cared for her entire life. This is unusual because who you are matched with is almost never from the same area you are, let alone someone you are so close to. Everything in the Society is planned out: what and how much food you eat, how long you exercise, and even your career. All this is done so everyone can obtain maximum happiness. So when Cassia looks at a chip she was given with Xander’s profile on it and the face of another boy pops up, her entire life is changed. Ky, the boy whose face showed up, is an aberration. An aberration is someone who is stripped of their title as a citizen for an act against the government. Ky’s parents died rebelling, so he was sent to live with his aunt and uncle but keeps his parents’ title. Aberrations are not allowed to be matched, so he should never have been even considered an option for Cassia, but there his face was. Now Cassia is faced with the difficult decision of choosing Xander and keeping her comfy life or going with Ky and having a whole world of options open up. Personally, I’m Team Ky.
