Teen Review: “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee
This classic book is set in a small town in the South during the Civil Rights movement. The story is told from the main character, Scout, who is about to start the first grade. Scout and her older brother Jem lead a free life, full of adventure, with a compassionate and intelligent father. But when their father, Atticus, a lawyer, takes on the defense case of a black man, their sheltered, sleepy life is changed. Though Scout is very intelligent, she is still a small child, so there is a lightness to this story, despite the rough time it is set in. I had always been hesitant to read this book, but my English teacher made me read it. I am so glad she did. I enjoyed every page of this book!
