Teen Review: “The Alchemyst” by Michael Scott
15-year-old twins Josh and Sophie Newman are working their summer jobs when Josh realizes that Nick, the bookseller at the bookstore he is working at, is not an ordinary human being. Rather, Nick is the immortal Nicholas Flamel, who has kept his wife and himself alive for several hundred years by mixing a potion known as the elixir of life, a secret they obtained from the Book of Abraham the Mage, also known as the Codex. Nicholas is trying to prevent Dr. John Dee, the antagonist of the novel, from using the Codex to summon the rise of the Dark Elders, which would destroy the world and ruin the human race. The plot follows Nicholas, his wife Perenelle, Josh, and Sophie and their attempt to rescue the Codex from Dee and save the world, as the twins come to realize that they possess magical powers – Sophie has a silver aura, and Josh has a much rarer golden aura. Harry Potter fans and lovers of the Percy Jackson series will probably also enjoy this addicting series by Michael Scott for its fantasy and incorporation of famous historical figures.
