Teen Review: “The Magician” by Michael Scott

“The Magician” by Michael Scott

The Magician is the second book in the “The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel” series, and I received encouragement to pursue reading the series from the impeccable storyline of its prequel, The Alchemyst. In The Magician, Sophie and Josh Newman further discover the strength of their powers, but both twins have very different reactions to what has been happening around them. Sophie, on one hand, wholeheartedly believes that Nicholas Flamel and his wife Perenelle want the best for her and her brother and are trying to protect them. Josh, unfortunately, is dubious of Flamel’s intentions and begins to wonder whether or not he should side with the villainous Dr. Dee and Niccolo Machiavelli, who plan to raise the Dark Elders, which would raze the human race and the world. I began to dislike Josh’s character after reading this because of his inability to choose a side, but his predicament is understandable. The story ends with a cliffhanger that has got me excited to read the third novel in the series, The Sorceress.
