Teen Review: “The Secret Life of Bees” by Sue Monk Kidd

Set in 1964, Lily Owens life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the death of her mother. When Lily’s strong hearted stand in mother, Rosaline, has a run in with three of the worst racists in town, Lily decides its time for them to escape town and go somewhere new. They run away to Tiburon, South Carolina; the town that hold secrets to her mothers death. They are taken in by three eccentric black beekeeping sisters who introduce Lily to the wonder of bees and honey, and the black Madonna. This is a great novel about the female power and the willingness to be who you are.
