Parman Teen Book Review: “The 5th wave” by Rick Yancey

The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

The 5th Wave is the first book in a series of books that author Rick Yancey plans on ending as a trilogy, with the publication of the third and final novel, The Last Star, this year. The protagonist of the novel is an average 16-year-old teenager, Cassiopeia “Cassie” Sullivan, who is one of the last survivors on the planet after an alien mothership landed on the Earth. The alien apocalypse occurs through a series of events, or different waves. The first wave featured an electromagnetic pulse that stopped all technology from functioning – phones, cars, even clocks. The second wave featured the aliens dropping huge metal rods against Earth’s tectonic plates to generate tsunamis along coastlines, killing millions of people. The third wave featured an airborne, avian virus that killed Cassie’s mother. The fourth wave involved the abduction of humans who were then turned into aliens to kill the remaining humans on Earth, and Cassie’s father was killed during this period. Now, it is the fifth wave, and Cassie embarks on a journey to find her little brother, Sammy, while desperately attempting to survive, even if it involves killing others. What challenges does the fifth wave bring Cassie? Read to find out…
