Welcome to 2018 with Encino Teens! We kicked off what is sure to be an epic year with a fun filled January. Teens tried out a new board game [Splendor] brought in by a fellow teen (sharing is caring y’all), got super crafty with upcycled bookmarks and painted cds + mini canvases, and got their munch on with pizza cake pops, smoothies, and indoor smores!! Our Anime teens finished Aoharu x Machinegun and watched Rwby and Yona of the Dawn this month PLUS had an amazing time hosting Chinatsu Oku from UTSA (check out our last post to read all about it!). Join us in February for Valentine’s Day goodies, a movie picked by popular vote, and fun games and crafts!

December @ Encino

Encino teens braved the cold weather this December for some awesome programming in the Encino Teen Space. While our monthly programs were abridged this month with the winter holidays, the fun was turned to full blast. Anime club had a busy month watching episodes from five animes (!!) including Aoharu x Machinegun, Kiro, Mayou, Dragon Maid, and School Living Club. We also are lots of candy and drank way too many cups of hot chocolate. But remember kids- use HOT water 🙂  Monopoly was the name of the game for teen board game night and the play got heated despite the soothing & Christmas-y musical styling’s of pentatonix in the background.

Encino was so excited to host the last leg of Fiesta Youth’s grand library tour, Lit out of the Closet, with our Festive Fairness program on December 13th. Our teens and the amazing facilitators from Fiesta Youth made snow globes and gingerbread houses while munching on candy canes. We learned about all of the cool things Fiesta Youth does in our community for LGBTQ teens and we really hope they can come back next year. Head on over to Fiesta Youth’s Instagram to see more photos!

Come on out to Encino in January to kick off a new year of teen programming with a special sushi making program on January 29th!

October @ Encino

Encino Teens had a spooktacular October with tons of Halloween themed snacks, crafts, and watchable things. Teen Club was our most festive program with teens painting pumpkins, coloring calaveras, making perler bead witches, pumpkins, and cats, watching  It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown (just as good as we remembered from childhood BTW) and making caramel apples. Plus we celebrate Teen Read Week by re-painting the stock poster and we like it a lottttttt more now.  Whew! So much holiday-ness! In other news anime club finished Overlord and Knight’s & Magic and started the simulcast of Kino’s Journey- the Beautiful World. Stay tuned for more about the last one—we’re really enjoying it so far.

Ever spent two hours on a game of Risk? Well Encino teens did this month in our monthly edition of Teen Board Gaming. World domination was sought by all and in the end we decided to carve up the world and each keep a piece (kinda fair right?- PS> I got Europe!). Finally, we watched Wonder Woman herself kick some bad guy butt on the big screen in our Teen Screen program and of course we had more super smash battles with friends cuz it’s our like our favorite video game.

Woah! I almost forgot! Check the last post to see how Encino teens seriously rocked it at our first annual Encino Cosplay Con!! It was the coolest seeing all of our amazing teens (plus a lot of new ones!) come out in their epic cosplays and battle in out in our lipsync competition and costume contest. Thank you to everyone who came out for this!

Join us in November for more exciting stuff including some web-flinging fun with Spider-Man:Homecoming, shrinky dink making, and lots of anime watching!  ❤ Julia

Encino Cosplay Con!

Posted in Comics, Crafts, Programs, San Antonio Public Library, Uncategorized with tags , on October 30, 2017 by encinolibraryteens

On October 21st Encino hosted our first annual Cosplay Con! It was SO much fun. We had over 80 teens and adults come out in such amazing costumes with props, makeup, wigs, and tons of other accessories. Our lipsync battle saw eight competitors lipsync their hearts out for prizes and a sparkly trophy with songs spanning many genres and fandoms. On the crafty side we had epic button making, balloon animals, and a huge collaborate canvas that got covered with doodles. Photo ops abounded with our green screen, cardboard cutouts, tardis, and GoT throne. Finally we had a great turn out for our costume contest which pitted over 15 cosplayers against each other in costume domination. Congrats to all our winners and participants and a special thanks to our Friends of Encino Library, our judges, and all of the businesses that contributed to our con. Come see us next year for even more cosplay fun!!!

August @ Encino

Encino Teens *brought it* to the teen room in August allowing us to turn up the volume on all our programs before the beginning of the school year. Chef Justin was back from the Food Bank with teens making delicacies from Asia and France. YUM! We continued our video game domination with epic super smash battles and mario kart races. Plus we pulled out some old favorites like Clue, Jenga, and Banagrams to round out our Teen Gaming nights.

We had two final movie nights to finish off summer 2017 featuring the stunning new Beauty and The Beast and the epic King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. Haven’t seen them? We think you should!

Craft time! Y’all know we get crafty up here. This month we tried some new stuff –> printmaking and tie dye! Both came out so awesome!! For our last Teen Tuesday we took our crafting outside making tie dye pillowcases that the teens got to take home. Hilarity ensued when some teens forgot to use gloves and dyed their hands as well as the fabric…. Oh well, tie dye hands are a thing too right? ALSO! We *upgraded* our slime from last month with glittery clear slime. So stretchy and slimy!

Anime Club was full of old and new faces in August, culminating an awesome summer of Anime watching! Teens picked Deathnote, Full Metal Alchemist, Blood Blockade Battlefront, and Punch Line to watch throughout the month.

We know you’re bummed that summer is over and you have to go to school 😦 … BUT! turn that frown upside down and come hang with us in September! More gaming, movies, anime, snacks, crafts and who knows what else coming your way! Help us decide @ the Encino Library!

July @ Encino

JULY! SUMMER! WOOHOO!

Encino Teens have had the most awesome month filled with crafts, gaming, snack-making, and anime and movie watching! We’ve been continuing our regular programs PLUS having a few special ones- like cooking with the San Antonio Food Bank! Chef Justin was back July 25th to cook with us. Teens took the task effortlessly chopping, stirring and whirring their way to a delicious vegetable curry and a nutritious mango lassi. NOMZ.

Our craftiness came out in full force this month with teens painting light-switch plates, making perler bead figures and gem magnets, sowing their own plushies, and making three epic batches of slime! …which proceeded to stick to everything- buuuut was so fun to play with 🙂

Monday nights’ anime club has been busier than ever with teens watching over eight different animes this month! Our faves were Orenchi No Furo Jijo and Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS. Speaking of watching–> teens got their share of cinematic adventures this month with screenings of the Lego Batman Movie and Power Rangers.  The general consensus was positive on the first one (go lego batman! go!), but negative on the former (sorry, no go go power rangers). Teens expressed their irritation at plot holes and cheesy dialog.

Finally, July gaming was at its most competitive when we hosted not one but two (!!!) Super Smash Bros tournaments.  We got fueled up with snocones and then battled for super smash supremacy with eight teens fighting for the title and the crown. A well-deserved pat on the back to all participants and a special high five to Cameron, our winner!

Come hang out with us in August for more exciting times in the Encino Teen Room!

Hi from Encino library world! We had such an awesome month staring things off with our Summer Reading Kickoff Party with ninja balloon assassin, green screen photos, tons of gaming and pizza!

Mondays this month were all about the Anime in (duh) Anime Club! Plus awesome snacks like SnoCones and smoothies to get us pumped for more episodes of Mob Psycho 100, Durarara, Torikno, Blood Blockade Battlefront, and My Hero Academia

We took our new Teen Tuesday program to the heights of DIY with plant pot decoupage, perler bead creations, and teen-made delicious food featuring dirt pudding and lazy smores bars. Teens took their cooking skills to the next level during a visit from Chef Justin of the San Antonio Food Bank. They made yummy Spanish food including gazpacho, paella, and sangria.

Finally (last but not least!) Wednesdays this month featured two epic teen gaming sessions and a *new program* we call Teen Screen where we watched Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (cosplay encouraged!).

Join us next month as we continue to cook around the world, watch a couple of new blockbuster movies, get our creative juices going with more crafts, and play so many more video games like our favorite super smash bros! 🙂

Landa Teens : May ’17

It’s the end of the semester and we have been doing All The Things : we started off May by doing our first Suggestion Box event : SLIME part II! It was super goopy goodness. We marbled with acrylics making marbled paper and mugs – perfect for gifting to our moms for Mothers Day – and had a reboot of Ziplock icecream with a Moana sing -a-long.

Our HelloGoodbye Bash (just your typical End of School Year – Landa Closing – Summer Starting Celebration) was pretty awesome, too. We made bots out of LEDs and clay, tried a round 2 of switch-plate decor, ate sooo much pizza and got prepped for summer reading. Oh yeah – we tested out Landa’s green screen too – it was epic.

Alright, that’s it for us –  Happy summer! We’ll see ya in the Fall.

 peace

Besides our fun experiences with the Oculus Rift this month, Encino Teens also did a lot of other cool activities worth sharing. We had a particularly game-centric month in teen club with our awesome teens bringing in their own card games to share. We played both One Night Ultimate Werewolf and Betrayal at House on the Hill. We also got a little crafty this month making our own fiesta float and painting light switch plates. April was also a super sugary month in the snacks department with munchies including brownies, cookies, candy, and cupcakes. Anime club featured epic discussions on subbed vs. dubbed, as well as viewing of five different anime series throughout the month. Come join us in May for more entertaining times in the Encino Teen Room! 🙂 🙂
